ARC: a safety management application for pilots
Our recent pride
Smooth transition of a desktop experience into mobile
In 2017 AviationManuals turned to us to help transition their desktop software into an iPad application
Our client is a company with a long and proud history. They started developing manuals for pilots in 1996. Up until 2017 they provided a desktop experience only.

With iPads becoming an industry standard in many areas, including aviation, it became obvious that desktop is simply not enough. Pilots wanted their software on tablets.
"Our goal was to create an app that featured the best parts of our online software. Most importantly to get it done on time and within a reasonable budget.
Mark Baier, CEO:
The company is the leading provider of manual development services and Safety Management System (SMS) software for business aviation flight departments, aircraft management companies, and independent operators.

Aviation Manuals has produced more than 4,000 manuals and supported over half of IS-BAO registered operators worldwide.

Having done several data rich apps in the past, we were quite confident that we would be a great fit
We are especially proud of the two apps we have developed for the Russian office of Johnson & Johnson.

This experience may have been the decisive argument for our new client.
Ethicon
An app replacing thousands and thousands catalogue pages for field sales representatives with a handy searchable database
Lifescan
A sales script with FAQs and calculators for field sales representatives designed for ease of use under stressful sales conditions.

"Better Bunch were able to start without a ton of lead time for "information gathering". That came up a lot with other companies we spoke to."
Mark Baier, CEO:
Also, the client liked our quick-to-start attitude
The secret is, of course, in the behind-the-scenes research our clients are not always aware of

Home Dashboard is an iPad only feature
The home screen of the app is the dashboard.

This module was designed exclusively for the iPad app from scratch based on the client's criteria.

The dashboard features snippets of the most important recently added data: resent tasks (such as forms that need to be filled out or documents that need to be read), drafts and filled out form which have not yet been synced with the server.

Risk Assessment is fully translated into mobile
This is a very handy instrument that allows pilots to estimate risks of an upcoming flight.

In this module pilots fill out a questionnaire and indicate various flight and conditions before the flight takes place.

The form is then sent to the back office where appropriate decisions will be made.

Forms are easier and quicker to fill out
This module is used for post flight reports.

The pilots answer various questions regarding the flight adhering to standards and procedures as well as possible incidents and deviations from the norm. The forms are then sent to the back office for processing.

This module allows work with multimedia: audio recording and upload of images and video.

The improvement of the iPad version is that the new interface allows for speedy tap-and-choose filling out scenario.

Documentation offers a Dropbox like experience
This module is a collection of instructions, memos, standards and procedures. The data is stored in a hierarchy and consists of various formats of media files: pdfs, plain texts, images, audio and video recordings.

The module allows written initials — a proof that the pilot has read and understood a particular document. The back office will see this confirmation upon the next sync with the server.

The crucial improvement of the iPad version is that it has become much easier to sort through documents and find the right one. We used Dropbox and other file sharing apps as inspiration while designing this module.
"Better Bunch is great at turning around work fast. They listen to our feedback and are able to anticipate how we'd like something to look without a ton of guidance."
Mark Baier, CEO:
They helped take a lot of the burden off of our hands. Timelines to review/test documents and provide feedback to The Better Bunch was probably our biggest challenge.
Our expectations were well managed for the most part. Certainly as far as timelines are concerned, most of the time as far as the budget is concerned.
It is incredibly important to us to deliver to our best abilities on our promise of worriless experience
